Knowledge breeds start-ups

Young innovators

Have you developed an innovative product or a novel process as part of your academic work? The Young Innovators funding programme run by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) supports you in taking the leap from theory to commercialisation.

Unlike other programmes, this one does not fund the start-up itself, but rather targeted preparation under the umbrella of the university. The programme is also the ideal follow-up funding if you have already completed an EXIST start-up grant. Companies that have already been established are excluded from funding.

Who is eligible for funding?

The programme is aimed at talented individuals who wish to bring their innovation to market through a university or research institution in Baden-Württemberg:

  • Research assistants & graduates: Your degree must have been awarded, or your departure from the role must have taken place, no more than 60 months prior to the application deadline.
  • Former EXIST grant recipients: Teams that require further development following the EXIST grant.

Important: Companies that have already been established are excluded from funding. The focus is on the phase immediately prior to market entry.

The four pillars of support

Young Innovators offers a comprehensive package to support technological development:

  1. Personal remuneration: You will be offered a post (50% TV-L Grade 13) for a maximum of two years (three years in exceptional cases) so that you can focus fully on your project.
  2. Equipment & investment funds: Up to €20,000 for necessary purchases (the items become the property of the HdM).
  3. Infrastructure: You will have access to the HdM’s laboratories, equipment and resources for your prototype development or testing.
  4. Coaching: Up to €5,000 for business management training (individual or group coaching) to help you develop your entrepreneurial skills.

Applications and deadlines

Applications can usually be submitted twice a year. The exact dates and current guidelines will be announced by the Ministry.
