Locksmith
The aim is to develop a modular, AI-powered matting unit that acts as an interface between the camera and the compositing system. The ‘Locksmith Box’ thus enables green-screen-free layer separation.
With the rise of virtual studio productions enabled by LED technology, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in this flexible production method has also grown. Despite technical advances, a recurring problem has arisen: time-consuming manual post-processing caused by a lack of sharpness in the separation between the foreground and background. With the aim of driving this development forward and solving this problem, the interdisciplinary founding team “Locksmith Labs” was formed.
What has been your biggest challenge so far?
The biggest challenge over the past year has been to turn our vision first into a functioning team and then into a start-up project eligible for funding.
Your tips for founders
The biggest lesson we’ve learnt over the last two months of funding has been not to underestimate the administrative burden of a start-up project. We would therefore advise any start-up team to address the necessary infrastructure, work processes and communication channels at an early stage and to allow sufficient time for this in their project plan.
